  17. <p>     AND DON'T INVITE LECH AND TADEUSZ to the same party. Most
  18. Poles realize that Solidarity cannot go on being all things to
  19. all people: trade union, political party, shaper of the
  20. country's future. But hopes that the breakup would be amicable
  21. now look unlikely. The problem stems from an old hero. Lech
  22. Walesa wants to be President by forcing an early election. But
  23. most Solidarity legislators seem to prefer remaining in
  24. government and Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Even though
  25. his drastic economic reforms have cut living standards as much
  26. as 40%, polls of Poles show that he is more popular than Walesa.
  27. Lech is sulking in Gdansk.
